How to Use Gemini API with Janitor AI
You need to follow my simple steps to set up the Gemini proxy on your Janitor AI account.
Step 01: First, go to this site – https://aistudio.google.com/app/apikey. You need to sign in through your Google account.

Step 02: Now, you need to generate an API key using the Gemini API. Once you generate your API key, simply copy it.
Step 03: The next step is to open your Janitor AI account, go to your API settings, and paste your API key into the Proxy section below, in the API Key box.
Step 04: Select the Custom option and add the model name of the API you’re using. For example, we are all in the Janitor AI community are using gemini-2.5-flash, so add this as the model name, and then add the proxy URL
https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta/chat/completions

Step 05: Once you’ve added all this information, simply click on “Check API Key/Model” to verify if it’s working. If you get the message “Your API key is valid,” you can move on to the next step.

However, if you don’t get this message or if you receive a network error, wait for a few minutes and try again. Sometimes, it works even if you don’t get any message after clicking on “Check API Key/Model.”
Step 06: Add your custom prompt, then simply click on Save Settings. After that, refresh the page, and you’re good to go.
If your Gemini API is working, you can start enjoying it. But if your API key isn’t working, then you’ll need to follow a few more simple steps.
Pro Tip: Optimal Settings For the best experience, use moderate temperature settings (0.7-0.9) and ensure your character card includes detailed descriptions for better roleplay quality.
Gemini API proxy No message replying error in Janitor AI
For example, if you message the bot and it just shows “replying” but nothing happens, then you need to try a few things:
- Wait for a few minutes or hours because it’s a free API, and high usage can cause this issue.
- API Misconfiguration: If your endpoint URL or model name is wrong, the request won’t process properly. Ensure the endpoint URL and model name are correctly set
- Create a different API key and try with that.
- Refresh the page and log in again to your Janitor AI account.
- Still not working? Then try switching the model. Most of the Janitor AI users use 2.5 Flash, but 2.0 Flash or other versions of Gemini give answers just as well. Personally, I’ve had no problems getting responses with both, but some people are facing issues with 2.5 Flash.
- Lastly, have patience. Sometimes there’s nothing we can do, and waiting is the only solution.
Here are some of the other Gemini API versions:
- Gemini 2.5 Pro
- Gemini 2.5 Flash
- Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite Preview 06-17
- Gemini 2.0 Flash
- Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite
Gemini API Error 429 Too Many Requests
If you’re dealing with this Gemini API error – {"error":{"message":"Request failed with status code 429","code":429,"statusText":"Too Many Requests"}}
You can fix it in two steps.
This error usually means you’ve reached the usage limit. Even if you don’t use it a lot, it can still happen. It’s just the system’s way of saying, “Hey, slow down for a bit!”
Check your usage: Sometimes, it helps to review your API usage to see if there are any spikes you might not be aware of. If you’re making multiple requests, try spacing them out. This means waiting a bit longer between requests if you keep hitting the error.
Step 1: To turn off the text streaming setting, you can find it on the right side. You will see this option at the bottom under the API settings.

Step 2: Refresh your chat twice, and it mostly works.
Gemini API is not working in My Country
If the Gemini API is not working in your country, you can access it with the help of a VPN. Use a good VPN, and yes, it should be turned on all the time. You can use NordVPN, as it works well in almost every scenario.
